Man charged with DUIs now facing murder count after fatal collision in Colton

A San Bernardino man already facing two DUI charges was arrested on suspicion of murder early Wednesday, March 6, after Colton police said he fatally struck a pedestrian while impaired.

Dallas John Chamney, 52, was being held without bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino County Superior Court records show.

Police believe Chamney had been drinking at a bar before the collision just before 1 a.m. in the 1200 block of N. 8th Street, Sgt. Ray Mendez said. Officers found a 23-year-old woman suffering from blunt-force injuries. She died at the scene. Her name was withheld until relatives could be notified.

Chamney fled the collision but was found and arrested nearby, at 1440 N. La Cadena Drive, a news release and jail records say.

Chamney has hearings scheduled in two cases in which he has been charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence. One hearing, following a November 2017 arrest, is scheduled for May 22. Another hearing, after a May 2018, arrest, is set for April 3. In a third case, Chamney pleaded guilty to reckless driving in February 2017, and a charge of driving under the influence was dropped, court records show.
