RIVERSIDE — A speeding motorist ran off Tuesday after plowing through a red light at a Riverside intersection, triggering a three-vehicle crash that left her passenger with life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The collision happened about 6 a.m. at Jurupa Avenue and Van Buren Boulevard, according to the Riverside Police Department. Sgt. Erich Feimer said the suspect was headed west on Jurupa in a GMC Yukon and ran a red light.
“The Yukon entered the intersection, where it was struck by a semi tractor-trailer being driven southbound on Van Buren,” Feimer said. “As a result of the collision, the (driver of the) Yukon lost control and collided with a Volkswagen Passat, which was eastbound on Jurupa, stopped for the red light.”
The unidentified Yukon driver bailed out of the severely damaged SUV and fled in an unknown direction, abandoning her front-seat passenger, who took the brunt of the side impact from the big rig, according to Feimer.
The victim was taken to Riverside Community Hospital and was in critical condition, according to the sergeant.
The Volkswagen driver suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalized. The trucker escaped injury, Feimer said.
Anyone with information about the woman at the wheel of the Yukon, or any other details regarding the collision, was asked to contact the police department’s traffic bureau at 951-826-8723.
