Two drivers, including a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy, were injured Monday, Feb. 25, in a collision in Jurupa Valley.
The crash happened about 4:15 p.m. at Limonite Avenue and Peralta Place, a sheriff’s spokesman said. The deputy, with his emergency lights and siren on, was responding to back up another deputy when the collision occurred.
The deputy, a sergeant, was driving east on Limonite and entered the intersection with Peralta as the driver of a westbound Honda Accord prepared to turn left onto Peralta, said Officer Dan Olivas of the California Highway Patrol, which is investigating the collision. The fronts of the vehicles collided, sending the deputy’s Ford Explorer into an electrical box. The Honda was propelled into the raised center median, Olivas said.
The Honda driver suffered major injuries and the deputy had minor injuries, Olivas said.
Neither driver appeared to be impaired, the sheriff’s spokesman said.
The vehicle code requires civilian drivers to yield to emergency vehicles that have emergency lights and sirens activated. The law also requires police officers and fire engineers to drive with caution to ensure the safety of other people and property.
