Five people including two California Highway Patrol officers were injured when a suspected drunk driver caused a three-car collision on the eastbound 60 Freeway in the Whittier area Tuesday morning, authorities said.
Officers arrested the driver, who was also hurt in the crash east of the 605 Freeway at around 2:50 a.m.
Two CHP officers from the Santa Fe Springs office were helping a driver of a stalled Mazda; the three were standing outside their vehicles.
A Chevrolet Malibu struck the patrol car, which was on the right shoulder of the freeway, CHP Sgt. Armando Perdomo said, pushing the black-and-white into the Mazda before the Malibu struck the the officers and the stranded driver.
The Malibu, which ended up back on the freeway itself, was hit by a Honda Accord.
The officers had minor injuries. The 38-year-old Baldwin Park man who had been in the Mazda, and suspect Adrian Estrada, 23, of El Monte suffered moderate injuries, Perdomo said. The Malibu’s passenger, a 26-year-old Panorama man, suffered moderate to major injuries.
The officers were treated at a hospital and released, Perdomo said. The others remain hospitalized.
Estrada was arrested at the hospital on suspicion of driving under the influence.
