A 72-year-old San Jacinto man died and a 33-year-old woman, also from San Jacinto, was seriously injured late Tuesday in a crash at Sanderson Avenue south of Gilman Springs Road, authorities reported.
The deadly crash near Gilman Hot Springs was followed 12 hours later on Wednesday by another one nearby that also claimed a life.
Zulfiqar Chaudhry died at the scene of the Tuesday crash at 11:15 p.m., the Riverside County Coroner reported Wednesday.
The California Highway Patrol said Chaudhry was driving a white 2004 Honda Civic southbound on Sanderson Avenue — Highway 79 — about 1/2 mile south of Gilman Springs Road. The woman was traveling northbound in a silver 1998 Honda Accord.
For unknown reasons, the CHP said, Chaudhry’s car drifted left, across the center median, and into the path of the woman’s car. He died from the collision and she was taken to Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley.
Cal Fire/Riverside County said one of the cars went over an embankment.
There were no passengers in either car, the CHP said. Alcohol, drugs or medical conditions have not been ruled out as factors in the crash, which remained under investigation, the agency said.
Highway 79 runs between Beaumont and San Jacinto.
