A woman who died when she crashed into a mountainside near Crestline after taking off in a paraglider has been identified as Lua Pepper, 44, of San Bernardino, the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office said.
Pepper was found dead about 9 p.m. Friday, after the accident was reported to dispatchers at 5:14 p.m., the coroner said.
Pepper had taken off near an area known as the Crestline Hang Glider and Paraglider Launch, west of Highway 138 in the San Bernardino Mountains.
A caller said that after she launched she had struck the mountainside near Playground Drive and Summit Drive.
Sheriff’s deputies on the ground and in the air, the San Bernardino County Fire Department and the sheriff’s San Bernardino Mountain Search and Rescue Team attempted to rescue the woman but found her dead, sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said Saturday.
The incident was being investigated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Twin Peaks station, the coroner said.
