RIVERSIDE — Five people suffered major injuries after their vehicle rolled over and into a natural gas line in Homeland on Saturday night, prompting closure of a road and evacuations.

Those injured in the vehicle were transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

Fifteen Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters responded to a call at 10:17 p.m., found a gas leak and immediately evacuated six residences, including 21 residents, from the 32000 block of Highway 74. Caltrans said all lanes of the highway were temporarily blocked near Vincent Avenue. All lanes were reopened by 11:50 p.m.

The Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team and the Southern California Gas Company were called to the scene. By 11:50 p.m.,  gas company crews had controlled the gas leak. Firefighters were working with law enforcement officials to provide for evacuated residents to return home.
