Defendant in fatal 2017 Rosemead Christmas Day crash pleads no contest to manslaughter

A San Gabriel man who had previously denied killing his passenger in a fatal single-vehicle collision last year on Christmas Day in Rosemead pleaded no contest on Wednesday, Dec. 12, to charges of manslaughter and drunken driving.

Adam Alexander Chacon, 35, was drunk behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz that slammed into a tree near the intersection of Valley and Temple City Boulevards in December 2017, said a statement issued by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office on Wednesday. He survived the collision, but his passenger, Justin Hansen, 25, of El Monte, was fatally injured in the crash.

Chacon was arrested on May 12, and had pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, according to the Wednesday statement. It said he now faces as many as 13 years in prison after pleading no contest to charges of voluntary manslaughter, taking a vehicle without consent, driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury within 10 years of a similar offense.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 3 at the Pomona branch of the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
