One person died after a car went over the edge of the road in the mountains above Glendora on Monday, starting a brush fire.

Capt. Andy Berg with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department in San Dimas said the crash was reported at around 5:15 p.m. on Highway 39, near mile marker 23.

Berg said he didn’t know how many people were in the car at the time of the crash and that rescue crews were dispatched.

Only one person was found in the vehicle, and that person did not survive the crash, the Los Angeles CountyFire Department said. While crews only found one person in the vehicle, they were combing the area for any other occupants who might have been ejected during the crash.

Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the person found inside the vehicle.

The brush fire spread to about three acres before fire crews stopped its spread, officials said.

Authorities said the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service worked to put the fire out, and a helicopter was available if needed for the incident.

The roads surrounding the crash on Highway 39 were closed in both directions while crews fought the fire and investigated the crash.
