A Lake Elsinore man died when the fast-moving Toyota Corolla he was a passenger in failed to make a curve on a road and overturned in a county area south of Corona, the California Highway Patrol said.
The 9:32 p.m. crash Saturday at Temescal Canyon Road north of Dawson Canyon Road claimed the life of Jerome Ereth II, 29, the Riverside County Coroner reported.
Ereth died at Riverside Community Hospital about two hours after the crash, the coroner’s office said.
The driver, Joseph A. Arias, 33, also of Lake Elsinore was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said. Ereth and Arias were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the 2001 Corolla when it crashed.
Arias suffered major injuries and was hospitalized, the CHP said. His name did not appear in a search Monday for Riverside County jail inmates.
The Corolla was southbound on Temescal Canyon Road north of Dawson Canyon Road and going fast as it approached a right curve on the road, the CHP said in an early report.
The car went into the northbound lanes, and Arias lost control when he made an unsafe turn to the right, the CHP report said. The Corolla smashed into a dirt embankment on the west edge of the road and overturned, ejecting both men, the CHP said.
No other vehicle was involved. The crash remained under investigation Monday.
