Riverside man sentenced in DUI crash that claimed San Bernardino woman’s life

A Riverside man has been sentenced to seven years and eight months in state prison on his guilty pleas tied to a 2017 driving-under-the-influence crash that killed a San Bernardino woman, court records show.

Irineo Del Castillo, 35, was sentenced Oct. 19 by San Bernardino County Superior Court Judge Dwight W. Moore. Del Castillo has been in custody since he pleaded guilty in September to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing bodily injury. He also admitted to causing bodily injury and death.

Ariell Gipson, 26, of San Bernardino, was killed June 3, 2017, while her car sat behind a sheriff’s transportation van at H and 5th streets at a red light in San Bernardino.

Police said Del Castillo sped off the 215 Freeway’s 5th Street off ramp, and the truck he was driving plowed into the back of Gipson’s compact car. Her car was pushed into the sheriff’s van, which had six inmates on board.

Del Castillo suffered minor injuries and police said at the time it appeared everyone in the sheriff’s van escaped serious injury. Reports from the time indicated Gipson was alone in her car.
