Crash damages Washington Street bridge over 215 Freeway in Colton

The Washington Street bridge over the 215 Freeway in Colton was damaged Tuesday, Oct. 2, when construction equipment struck the bridge, causing concrete to crash into traffic lanes.

The right two southbound lanes of the 215 were temporarily closed about 2:30 p.m. as crews addressed the problem, Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said. She described the damage as “moderate to major.”

But the girder that was damaged was not directly under the bridge’s traffic lanes, so the bridge will remain open, Kasinga said.

“The bridge is safe and structurally sound,” Kasinga said.

The lanes reopened in the evening.

A truck was carrying what was reported as a backhoe, and the backhoe hit the bridge. Some vehicles were hit by the concrete, the California Highway Patrol log said.

“Lots of concrete in lanes,” the log said.
