A student walking to Pacific High in San Bernardino died Friday, Sept. 28, after she was hit by a vehicle that then fled the scene, the California Highway Patrol said.
Jade Maldonado, 14, was struck near Glasgow Avenue and Pacific Street just after 7 a.m., a CHP dispatcher said.

She was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when a vehicle – described as a tan 2000 to 2004 GMC SUV traveling 40-50 mph – struck her and kept on driving, according to a CHP news release.
Paramedics took Jade to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she underwent surgery. She died at 1:26 p.m.
In a letter sent to parents, Principal Natalie Raymundo said the San Bernardino City Unified School District’s Crisis Intervention Team was at the school Friday and will be there Monday as well.
“Our school counselor will remain available to students to help them process this unfortunate event,” the statement says. “If you notice over the weekend that your child is having difficulties, feel free to contact the school Monday morning so that our counselors can follow up.”
The letter also lists a number for the Community Crisis Response Team for emergencies over the weekend: 909-421-9233.
Investigators asked anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have information regarding it to contact the CHP at 909-383-4247.
