A Riverside man has been arrested on suspicion of a hate crime and assault after a road rage incident ended with the man swinging a hatchet at a delivery driver and calling him “a racially sensitive name,” police said.
The unidentified driver, described as Hispanic, was not injured, Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback said in an email. “He was able to back away from the suspect (as) he swung the hatchet at him,” Railsback wrote.
Blake Baldwin, 21, was arrested on suspicion of a felony hate crime and for felony assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm. He was not in custody Tuesday.
Police said they were called at 6:42 p.m. Saturday to the 8300 block of Manhasset Street in the city on the report of an assault on the delivery driver.
“The driver and suspect were involved in a road rage incident where the suspect followed the driver to one of his stops, swung a hatchet at him, and then called him derogatory names,” the release said.
The police summary said officers found Baldwin after the incident and arrested him, and the hatchet was recovered.
