Fontana police: Pregnant woman struck by suspected DUI driver is forced to deliver prematurely

A pregnant woman struck by a suspected intoxicated driver was forced to deliver her child prematurely, and the infant is currently in critical condition, Fontana police said Thursday.

“(Paramedics) had to rush her to the hospital,” said Officer Rajaie Sayegh, spokesman for the police department.

Around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, the woman, traveling north on Catawba Avenue, had stopped at a stop sign at San Bernardino Avenue then proceeded through, he said.

At the same time, an eastbound vehicle failed to stop at the intersection and T-boned the woman’s car.

The driver of the second vehicle was also taken to the hospital and was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Sayegh said, but the officer did not have the driver’s name Thursday morning.

The crash is still under investigation, officials said.
