The suspected driver of a pickup who police said fled from the scene of a fiery fatal collision at Central Avenue near the 91 Freeway on Saturday, but was grabbed by two witnesses, has been arrested after receiving medical treatment.
Arthur Armando Alvarez, 27, Redlands, was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run in a collision that caused death, both felonies. He remained in custody Tuesday at the Robert Presley Detention Center.
Authorities said a passenger in the pickup truck — which police said Alvarez was driving — died in the crash. That victim, a man, had not been identified as of Tuesday evening by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
A third person in the pickup, and three people in the other car, were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Corona police said the incident began in their town just after 8 a.m. Saturday when a witness reported seeing someone hot wiring the pickup near a Jack in the Box restaurant on Green River Road in Corona.
The pickup entered the eastbound 91 at Green River Road, and police began a pursuit.
The pickup left the 91 just inside the Riverside city limits. When the driver ran a red light at La Sierra and Indiana avenues, Corona police Lt. Jim Auck said, Corona police ended the chase and returned to their city.
The pickup then apparently re-entered the 91. At about 8:30 a.m., Riverside police said, the pickup exited the 91 at Central “at a high rate of speed.”
The pickup ran a red light and collided with a car that was westbound on Central, according to the preliminary investigation. The pickup overturned and caught fire.
