A 56-year-old man nearly crash head-on into a Chino police officer’s vehicle before leading the officer on a short pursuit early Tuesday morning in Chino, officials said.

The officer was driving west on Edison Avenue near 12th Street around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, when a vehicle heading east in the westbound lanes drove right at the patrol vehicle, said Tamrin Olden, a spokeswoman for the Chino Police Department.

The officer was able to avoid the head-on crash and immediately tried to pull the driver, later identified as Matthew McGilvray, over, she said.

McGilvray reportedly refused to pull over and kept driving east until he crashed into a curb at Edison and Fern avenues, disabling his vehicle.

“He remained in his vehicle and wouldn’t reply to officer’s commands,” Olden said. “Officers deployed the bearcat to safely communicate and monitor his actions.”

After about 30 minutes, McGilvray gave up and came out of his vehicle, she said. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and felony evading.

He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga and is being held in lieu of $110,000 bail.
