Hit-and-run driver who struck hydrant causes flooding to Riverside school

Last Updated on June 9, 2018 by CCAR Staff

A hit-and-run driver sheared off a fire hydrant in Riverside on Saturday, June 9, causing water to flood an elementary school.

The water flooded three classrooms at La Granada Elementary at 10346 Keller Ave., Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff DeLaurie said.

The water from the hydrant — pouring out at 2,000 gallons per minute — overwhelmed the street’s drains, DeLaurie said. Firefighters put tarps in front of the classrooms, but about 2 inches of water managed to get inside each of them.

Firefighters put computers out of the reach of the water.

The white sedan was crumpled on the right front side. A man in a red shirt was seen running from the area. A video, shot by Steve Johnson, co-founder of the Facebook group What is Going on in Riverside County?, shows the mayhem.
