Pomona police arrested a 48-year-old man who may have been intoxicated and failed to stop during a pursuit Tuesday afternoon.
Police received a phone call at 1:20 p.m. from a concerned acquaintance of Anton Laron Mitchell stating that he may have been robbed and was being held against his will. The caller was still on the phone with Mitchell, and he wasn’t making sense, according to a Pomona police news release.
The caller could hear Mitchell saying things like, “He was going to give up” and “They were going to kill him.”
Officers responded to the area of Orange Grove Avenue and La Verne Street and found a blue 2001 Saturn described by the caller. Police tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the Saturn driver refused to stop.
Officers pursued the vehicle through Pomona at slow speeds for about 20 minutes. The pursuit continued south to Mission and then west on Mission passing the Pomona Police Department. A probation office in Pomona was temporarily placed on lockdown when Mitchell said he wanted to see his probation officer.
A police supervisor eventually performed a special maneuver on the car to end the pursuit. Mitchell, 48, of Pomona, was taken into custody on suspicion of felony evading police, driving while under the influence of alcohol and a probation violation. He was booked into Pomona jail in lieu of $75,000 bail, according to online jail records.
