Fontana man in custody following fatal Rialto hit-and-run

A Fontana man led police on a short chase Tuesday night after a woman was struck and killed in Rialto. The pursuit ended when he crashed into the fence of his home and then was arrested, police say.

The woman, identified as Sarah Louise Gasper, 39, of Rialto, was walking across Foothill Boulevard near North Eucalyptus Avenue around 10 p.m. Tuesday when hit, officials said. Gasper, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was using the marked crosswalk, Rialto police said.

Officers said she was struck by a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Jose Francisco Romero Jr. who they say didn’t stop after hitting Gasper. A witness called 911 and followed Romero, and when police pulled up behind him, he sped off, the department said in a news release.

A short pursuit ended when Romero crashed into a side fence of his own home.

Romero was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading police, as well as driving while under the influence resulting in injury to another. He was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
