POMONA — A motorist was killed Saturday when his car hit the center divider of the 10 Freeway in Pomona, and a second car hit it, causing a fire.
The first motorist had been involved in a single-vehicle crash about 3:10 a.m. on the eastbound freeway, west of Dudley Avenue, and his car stopped straddling the line between the carpool lane and the left through lane, said CHP Sgt. L.R. Borunda.
A 28-year-old man in a 2004 Mitsubishi did not see the disabled 1994 Toyota in front of him until it was too late, when he braked and swerved, his car struck the left side of the Toyota, Borunda said.
The impact caused the Toyota to burst into flames and the motorist inside that car was unable to extricate himself, he said.
One person died at the scene, said a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher.
The body was “charred beyond recognition,” said Lt. Dave Smith of the coroner’s office.
Three others received minor injuries but did not require a hospital visit, the dispatcher said.
It was not immediately known if the three minor injuries were inside the Toyota or Mitsubishi.
The CHP’s Baldwin Park office asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (626) 338-1164.
