A judge denied lowering the bail of a Covina man accused of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in a case that left a child dead following a crash on the 210 Freeway in Rialto last August, officials said.
Michael Jonathan Cuevas, 27, was in West Valley Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday, March 27 when his attorney’s request for bail reduction from $1 million was denied.
Cuevas was first arrested soon after the Aug. 23 crash on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to reports, but was subsequently released on bail. It was during his arraignment on March 21 that he was taken into custody again, booking records show. At the time of his arraignment, he had already been charged with murder.
Richard Alvarez, 12, suffered major injuries from the crash on the 210, east of Riverside Avenue. The boy died a few days later, said California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Alvarez, who is not related.
The San Bernardino boy was with his mother after his older sister called their mom for help with a flat tire.
Adriana Alvarez was in the disabled Toyota Camry in the center median of the eastbound lanes, the officer said, when her mother, Antoinette Alvarez, drove up with her son in a Honda Accord.
“The mother was stopped behind the Toyota when the Infiniti Q45, driven by Cuevas, drove into the back of the Honda, pushing it into the Camry,” Brian Alvarez said.
Cuevas was taken to a hospital before his first arrest in the case.
