A motorist died Friday when his box truck struck a guardrail, overturned and collided with a sign post on the eastbound 60 Freeway in Diamond Bar.
The fatal crash happened around 5:40 a.m.
The coroner’s office has not yet identified the driver. California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez described the driver as a 28-year-old San Pedro man.
Jimenez said the box truck was traveling between 50 to 60 mph as it approached the Grand Avenue off-ramp. The truck drifted to the right and hit a guardrail.
He said the truck continued onto the off-ramp where it overturned onto its right side, slid then collided with a large freeway sign post.
The driver was trapped. Jimenez said paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Debris from the crash hit a passing Hyundai Sonata. Jimenez said a minute later, a Ford F-150 exiting Grand Avenue collided with the box truck.
He said the 58-year-old Anaheim man driving the Hyundai and the 57-year-old Fullerton man driving the pickup weren’t injured.
The CHP shut down the off-ramp.
Jimenez said about 15 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the box truck’s fuel tank into a nearby storm drain. A hazardous materials crew cleaned up the spill.
