A driver was killed following a crash involving a large truck and a compact vehicle early Monday morning in Fontana, police said.

The crash was first reported around 5 a.m. at Sierra and Slover avenues, officials said in a Twitter post. A photograph from the scene shows a crumpled, gray vehicle sitting next to a large box truck.

The truck was sitting in the northbound lanes of Sierra Avenue at Slover Avenue, waiting to make a turn when the driver of an Acura, also traveling north, slammed into the back of the large vehicle, said Sgt. Kevin Goltara with the Fontana Police Department.

“The driver was transported to a local hospital where he later died,” Goltara said in an email.

A female passenger was uninjured.

Authorities asked motorists to avoid the area.
