A deputy’s quick reactions saved him from possible injury early Monday, Feb. 12, when his patrol car was sideswiped in Victorville, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
The deputy, responding to a call near Hesperia and Chalon roads, was getting into his marked patrol vehicle just after 2 a.m. when he noticed a Ford Expedition approaching fast, sheriff’s officials said in a news release.
The deputy was able to run around the front of his vehicle and get to the shoulder just as the SUV’s side mirror hit his side mirror. The deputy was not injured, the release said.
The SUV’s driver, 40-year-old Veronica Calvert of Victorville, continued speeding down the road, the release said. The deputy got into his vehicle and was able to stop Calvert a little over a half-mile away, on Hesperia Road near Seneca Road.
The deputy determined Calvert was driving under the influence and arrested her, officials said. She was cited and released, jail records show.
