A 27-year-old Rialto man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his conviction in an October 2016 vehicular manslaughter case in San Bernardino.
Victim Tan Phung’s car became disabled on the 210 Freeway near Waterman Avenue and while inspecting his car he was struck by a car driven by Alex Reider, who fled the scene without stopping to assist, according to a San Bernardino County District Attorney’s news release.
Reider pleaded guilty last month to one count of felony gross vehicular manslaughter, one count of felony hit-and-run causing death and one count of felony insurance fraud. He was sentenced Friday, Jan. 19, in San Bernardino County Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga.
Phung, 27, of Newhall, died at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Reider contacted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department with a report that his Infinity was stolen Oct. 28, 2016, the day before the collision while at the home of Daniel Cordona in Rancho Cucamonga.
The California Highway Patrol recovered the car in an unincorporated area near San Bernardino.
Reider filed a theft claim with his insurance provider to repair the damage. DNA testing of blood on the car revealed Reider’s blood on the driver’s door and Phung’s blood on the front fender, according to the district attorney’s news release.
Cordona, 27, was convicted of perjury, insurance fraud and being an accessory after the fact. He was sentence to three years felony probation and 270 days in county jail custody in October 2017.
The district attorney’s automobile insurance fraud unit and the CHP jointly investigated the case.
