A 21-year-old Colton motorcyclist died Saturday night, Jan. 20 in a collision with a vehicle that had gone airborne after being hit by another vehicle near a freeway interchange in San Bernardino, authorities said.
About 10:15 p.m., two vehicles — a Honda and a Chevy — were driving south on the 215 Freeway just south of the 210 Freeway, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
A 26-year-old San Bernardino man driving the Honda changed lanes and hit the Chevy, driven by a 29-year-old Apple Valley man, the CHP release said.
The Chevy then hit the concrete barrier, ricocheted off, drove up the embankment, hit a metal guardrail and went airborne, ending up on the transition road connecting the eastbound 210 to the southbound 215, the CHP said.
A man identified by the coroner as Omar Campos had the misfortune to be riding his Yamaha motorcycle on the transition road. He was hit by the out-of-control Chevy and thrown off his bike onto the roadway, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The drivers of the Chevy and Honda were not injured, the CHP said.
The release didn’t note whether speed, alcohol or drugs were possible factors, but it did say the crash remains under investigation. The CHP encouraged anyone with additional information to call investigators at 909-383-4247.
