Former NBA star Dennis Rodman enters rehab after suspected DUI in Newport Beach

Dennis Rodman, a former NBA rebound champion who won five championships while playing for the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls and briefly was on the Lakers, has checked into a New Jersey rehab facility in the wake of getting arrested in Newport Beach on suspicion of driving under the influence, his agent said.

Dennis Prince told The Associated Press that the retired basketball player had checked into Turning Point Rehabilitation Center, in Patterson for alcohol addiction.

Rodman, 56, was pulled over for a traffic violation shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, near 4500 W. Coast Highway in Newport Beach, police have said.

Rodman failed a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer, Newport Beach police said. He was subsequently arrested and then released at 6:15 a.m. Sunday.

In 2014, Rodman spent three weeks at Turning Point after a trip to North Korea, where he had organized a basketball game with retired NBA players for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. That time, Rodman said he needed to decompress from the trip.

In February, Rodman was sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving the wrong way on the I-5 freeway in Santa Ana, giving a police officer false information and driving without a license. A misdemeanor hit-and-run charge was dropped as part of the plea agreement, which included 30 hours of community service.

Rodman has lived in Newport Beach, although it is unclear if he still resides there.
