An off-duty sheriff’s deputy suffered “severe injuries” when he was punched Sunday, Dec. 31, after a traffic collision in San Bernardino.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victim but he was a 70-year-old resident of San Bernardino and a 33-year veteran of the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, said San Bernardino police Lt. Mike Madden.
The drivers of both vehicles stopped after the crash at 10:50 a.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and Kendall Drive. Then the suspect struck the deputy, Madden said.
The suspect was arrested but his identity was not immediately available.
San Bernardino Police Department’s Homicide Unit asks anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective J. Casto at 909-384-5747 or Sgt. Mahan at 909-388-4955.
The deputy’s name has not been released because the investigation by San Bernardino police is a gang investigation, said sheriff’s Sgt. Marc Bracco. The deputy remains in critical condition at a local hospital, Bracco said.
