Passers-by were able to rescue the driver — but not the passenger, who died — when a car crashed into a light pole and burst into flames near Cal State San Bernardino early Wednesday, according to a San Bernardino police news release.
Daniel Ochoa, 20, of San Bernardino, was driving at a high rate of speed eastbound on Kendall Drive when he attempted to make a left turn onto northbound University Avenue and struck a light pole at 1:12 a.m., the news release stated.
His 2017 Honda Civic was engulfed in flames and passers-by pulled Ochoa out, but were not able to reach the passenger, whose identity was being withheld pending notification of survivors.
Ochoa remains in critical condition at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police are saying that alcohol is a factor.
Police say they believe the men were both students at Cal State San Bernardino.
