A 16-year-old San Bernardino girl is in custody after allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road, leading Colton police on a pursuit, ramming directly into a pursuing officer’s vehicle until finally crashing into a palm tree in Riverside early Monday morning, police said.
Just before 12:30 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle driving the wrong way near H Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue in Colton and tried to pull the driver over, according to a news release. But the driver, an unidentified 16-year-old girl, refused to stop and drove off, the release states.
“During the pursuit the driver drove in opposing lanes, coming head on into other vehicles,” the statement said. “The driver drove directly into a pursuing police vehicle and collided into the officer; disabling the police vehicle.”
Officers attempted a PIT Maneuver but the teen girl was able to avoid it and continued her getaway, officials said.
The pursuit continued into Riverside where the girl lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a palm tree, police said. The location of the end of the pursuit was not released.
A passenger in the rear of the vehicle and the 16-year-old driver received medical attention as a result of the crash, officials said, but the extent of their injuries was not released.
No further information about the passenger was released.
The girl was later taken and booked into Juvenile Hall.
It’s still not clear why the girl fled from police or why she was driving on the wrong side of the street.
