91 Freeway westbound reopens in Corona after three-hour lanes shutdown due to collision, fuel spill

A SigAlert on the westbound 91 Freeway at Lincoln Avenue in Corona was lifted at about 9:35 p.m. Thursday, according to a California Highway Patrol traffic incident log.

The trouble began about three hours earlier and was the second time Thursday a collision snarled traffic in the city.

Five lanes of the westbound 91 Freeway were closed  due to a multi-car collision and fuel spill blocking all but one lane, according to a Caltrans tweet and CHP traffic log.

Motorists reported an SUV stopped in the No. 3 lane. Then a semi-truck collided with the first vehicle and other vehicles became involved, according to the log.

Callers reported up to 10 vehicles involved, but it was unclear whether they collided or had just hit an oil slick.

The CHP called for a SigAlert at 7:30 p.m. and a Caltrans crew for clean up of what was described as 200 to 300 feet of oil in the roadway.

Traffic slowed to just east of the 91 and 15 Freeway interchange. As of 8:22 p.m., the 91 Freeway Expresslanes signs were displaying a message that there was no charge for using the westbound Fastrak toll lanes because of the SigAlert, according to the CHP site.

There was a call for an ambulance but no immediate details about any injuries.

The incident follows an unrelated fuel spill at 6:07 p.m. Thursday on the Pyrite Street off ramp of the westbound 60 Freeway in Jurupa Valley, where a semi-truck sustained a 100-gallon ruptured fuel tank.

The clean up shut down the off ramp until about 9:30 p.m., according to a CHP log.

About 15 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into a storm drain, with an additional 40 gallons of diesel fuel pooled on the ground, according to a Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department news release. The agency’s hazardous materials team was called out.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the Jurupa Valley incident.

Earlier in the afternoon, about 2:30 p.m. most westbound 91 Freeway lanes by the westbound 71 closed for almost two hours after a collision between trucks.
