An 18-year-old Montebello man died and two others teens were hurt when a car plummeted more than 500 feet over the side of Glendora Ridge Road in the Angeles National Forest southwest of Mount Baldy, officials discovered Sunday.

The crash was discovered about 10 a.m. between mile markers 8 and 10 of the winding mountain road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Nicholson. But the victims may have been stranded at the crash scene for nearly a day, as the crash was believed to have taken place at an unknown time of day Saturday.

Rescuers shut down Glendora Ridge Road as they lowered paramedics to the wreckage, which ended up between 500 and 900 feet down a cliffside, according to CHP officials and logs.

One person managed to get out of the mangled 2017 Ford Fiesta, while two others were still trapped when first responders arrived on scene, officials said.

The young man killed in the crash had been a passenger, according to CHP Officer Jeremy Brown. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. His identity was not available.

Another passenger, described as an 18-year-old Los Angeles woman, was hospitalized with injuries including a compound fracture to her leg, Brown said. The driver of the car, an 18-year-old Montebello man, suffered major injuries to his back and hips.

The car was headed east on Glendora Ridge Road “at an unknown high rate of speed” when it approached a curve, according to Brown. The “unsafe speed” resulted in the car failing to negotiate the curve and flying off the road and down the mountain, Brown said in a written statement.

Alcohol or drugs were not suspected to have played a role, Brown added. None of the three occupants of the car were believed to have been wearing seatbelts.

CHP logs indicated the young woman injured in the crash had been reported missing early Sunday morning to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s East Los Angeles Station. She had last been heard from at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Officers from the CHP’s Baldwin Park-area office are handling the investigation. Anyone with information can reach the office during normal business hours at 626-338-1164.
