A passenger was fatally injured and the driver seriously hurt Thursday, Nov. 9 in a one-vehicle crash on the 10 Freeway in Banning, the California Highway Patrol said.

The incident occurred about 10 a.m. when a 2003 Chevrolet truck veered off the freeway near the Sunset off ramp, CHP officer Darren Meyer said. The truck continued down an embankment and hit a tree.

The passenger, a 27-year-old San Clemente man, was pronounced dead at the scene by Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department personnel, a Cal Fire/Riverside County incident report showed. He has not yet been identified by authorities.

The driver, 28, from Banning was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, Meyer said. An update on his condition was not immediately available, but he is expected to survive, Meyer said.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, and investigators have not ruled out drugs or alcohol, Meyer said.
