A 23-year-old Indio man was killed Thursday morning after his vehicle smashed into the back of a tractor trailer along the 10 Freeway in Coachella, officials said.

The crash was first reported just after 5 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the freeway east of Dillon Road, according to a Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire news release.

Frank Mendez was driving a 2011 Ford F-350 pickup truck westbound on the freeway. The front of his truck struck the rear of the 2003 Sterling big rig that was towing one trailer, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

The impact wedged the service truck under the large trailer, according to the CHP traffic incident log. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the big rig, Jannete Nunez, 31, of Zapata, Texas, was not injured. The collision still is under investigation.
