West Covina police are looking for the driver who struck a woman crossing a street and fled the scene early Thursday morning. The injured pedestrian later died at a hospital.
Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter did not release the woman’s name because her next of kin has not been notified yet. Winter said the woman’s family is in China. He described the pedestrian as an Asian woman in her 30s who lives in West Covina.
The hit-and-run occurred on Azusa and Francisquito avenues.
West Covina Officer Eddie Flores said the woman was crossing Azusa Avenue when a car heading northbound on Azusa hit her. The driver did not stop.
Someone called 911 at 12:52 a.m. and reported an injured pedestrian. Flores said officers found the woman on the street. Paramedics took her to a hospital where she later died.
Police don’t have a description of the driver, but the car was described a light-colored, compact vehicle.
It’s the second pedestrian killed this week in the city.
Lan Lan Thai was walking at Cortez Street and Magnolia Avenue on Monday morning when a Toyota Corolla heading east on Cortez Street hit her. West Covina police believe the driver was temporarily blinded by the glare from the rising sun and did not see Thai.
Thai died at a local hospital.The driver in the Monday crash remained at the scene and was not arrested. Police don’t suspect a crime occurred.
But they view the Azusa Avenue case as a hit-and-run.
