The driver of a speeding BMW was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he lost control of his car and slammed into a Nissan Sentra, killing the Nissan’s driver Wednesday afternoon near Riverside, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
After the initial collision, several other collisions occurred, involving a total of seven vehicles.
Anthony Lopez, 38, of Moreno Valley, was eastbound on Alessandro Boulevard approaching Meridian Parkway — which becomes Sycamore Canyon Boulevard north of Alessandro — where traffic was stopped, the CHP said. That’s when Lopez lost control and hit the Nissan.
A 62-year-old man, Lamond Mansell, Temecula, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:33 p.m. collision, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
One occupant of another vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, according to a Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department news release.
The collisions closed streets approaching the intersection, as well as the Alessandro off-ramps and on-ramps to the 215 Freeway for about four hours.
The on-ramps and off-ramps reopened about 7:45 p.m. and Alessandro reopened about 8:45 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol traffic incident log.
The crash is near an intersection of unincorporated county area and the cities of Moreno Valley and Riverside, which prompted a response from multiple public safety agencies.
