SAN BERNARDINO >> An unidentified person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down the northbound 215 Freeway near Fifth Street in San Bernardino early Monday, according to California Highway Patrol reports.
“I heard cars hitting and swerving,” said Miguel Weaver, who was driving north on the 215 Freeway near Fifth Street about 4:30 a.m. “One guy was swerving toward me and I thought, ‘I can’t be here, it’s not safe.’”
“It was really dark and you couldn’t tell what was happening until you got right up on it,” he said.
Weaver said he saw a crashed vehicle and what appeared to be a body lying in the emergency lane. He pulled over to call 911, then started hearing the sound of other vehicles crashing.
Initial CHP reports show up six cars were involved, one of which caught fire.
Video from the scene shows a burned sports car resting against the center divider and a white compact vehicle facing the wrong way.
By about 5 a.m., the CHP was diverting all traffic off the northbound freeway and the coroner was summoned.
All lanes of the northbound 215, as well as the Fifth Street off-ramp, reopened about 9:30 a.m., CHP reports indicate.
By 6 p.m., coroners officials had not released the identity of the person who died.
