NORCO >> A Barstow woman riding a motorcycle was killed on Memorial Day when she veered off the 15 Freeway in Norco and was hit by a driver who is suspected of being drunk, authorities say.
Ava Reyes-Halsey, 42, was killed, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.
Genesis Velazquez, 27, of Jurupa Valley was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and other charges. She remained in custody Tuesday with bail set at $1 million.
About 9:45 p.m. Monday, Reyes-Halsey was riding a 2017 Yamaha north on the 15 near Sixth Street alongside a man on a 2012 Yamaha, CHP officials said. Velazquez was driving behind them in a 2002 BMW.
Due to “possible mechanical issues,” the motorcyclists slowed down and veered from the left lane toward the left shoulder, the CHP release said. That’s when Velazquez — for reasons still under investigation — crashed into both motorcycles.
Reyes-Halsey was thrown onto the roadway, the release said. Paramedics took her to a hospital where she later died.
Neither the male motorcyclist nor Velazquez was injured.
The CHP asks that anyone with information regarding the crash contact investigators at 951-637-8000.
