POMONA >> The coroner’s office Saturday released the name of a 39-year-old man who died when the SUV he was driving crashed and caught fire in Pomona.

The motorist was identified as Raymundo Romario of Pomona, said Lt. David Smith of the coroner’s office.

The SUV crashed into two parked cars at 3:40 a.m. Friday on Towne Avenue near Ninth Street, according to the Pomona Police Department.

“It rolled over onto its side causing a small fire to begin in the engine area,” a police statement said. “Responding officers found the driver still inside the vehicle and unconscious.”

Romario, who was alone in the silver SUV, died at the scene.

Anyone with information on the crash was urged to call the Pomona Police Department’s Traffic Services Bureau at (909) 620-2081.
