POMONA >> A driver was killed in a fiery crash early Friday morning, and Pomona police advised motorists to avoid the area for several hours.

Officers and emergency personnel were called out to Towne Avenue between Ninth and 11th streets around 3:40 a.m. for a vehicle that crashed and then caught fire, according to a news release.

A witness told officers that a silver SUV crashed into two parked cars on Towne Avenue just south of Ninth Street, causing it to roll over onto its side, officials said. A small fire then ignited in the engine compartment, according to police.

Officers found the driver still inside the vehicle and unconscious.

With help from Los Angeles County firefighters, the blaze was extinguished, but the unidentified driver died while trapped inside, according to the statement.

The area was shut down for several hours as police investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
