Truck crash dumps fuel, closing Fontana street

FONTANA >> About 150 gallons of fuel were spilled in the aftermath of a crash involving a tractor trailer in Fontana early Thursday morning.

“About 20 gallons made it into the storm drain,” said Eric Sherwin, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department. “Then after they closed down westbound Foothill (Boulevard), a bunch of cars drove through it, spreading the fuel about 300 feet.”

The initial crash was reported around 1:30 a.m. at Foothill Boulevard and Alder Avenue, he said.

A tank ruptured, sending the fuel into the street and prompting authorities to shut down the roadway for cleanup.

A private crew was on scene Thursday morning to take care of the spill. Members of the county fire Hazardous Material unit were also at the crash site Thursday.

The Department of Fish and Game was notified because fuel entered the storm drain, Sherwin said.

Authorities expect the street to be reopened around 9 a.m.
