FONTANA >> Police arrested a Highland man early Tuesday morning after a chase on city streets ended in a head-on crash.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m., officers watched a vehicle run a stoplight at the intersection of Cherry and Baseline avenues, according to a Fontana police news release.
A traffic stop was initiated, but the driver of the vehicle fled from the pursuing officers, weaving in and out of lanes. When the driver, later identified as Juan Juarez, 23, of Highland, neared the intersection of Cherry and Foothill Boulevard, he allegedly crossed over the double yellow line, crashing head-on into an oncoming vehicle and causing a chain reaction crash of several vehicles, the dispatch states.
Once the car came to a stop, police allege Juarez tried to run away on foot, but they quickly apprehended him.
Several occupants of the other vehicles suffered minor to severe injuries and were either treated on scene or taken to a hospital for treatment. Police discovered the vehicle Juarez was driving was considered an unreported stolen vehicle, the news release says.
Juarez was out of jail on bail after being arrested by the San Bernardino Police on March 2 for suspicion of stealing and possession of a stolen vehicle, burglary and resisting arrest at the time of this crime.
He was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga for suspicion of felony evading, felony driving under the influence causing injury, possession of a stolen vehicle and committing a crime while out on bail.
He’s being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
