RANCHO CUCAMONGA >> Deputies are searching for the hit-and-run driver who sheared a fire hydrant early Tuesday morning before abandoning the vehicle a short distance away.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s Rancho Cucamonga deputies spotted the gusher near Base Line and Archibald Road just after 2:30 a.m., according to Lt. Frank Montenez. Deputies then found a damaged vehicle a short distance from the crash scene, officials said.

City crews were called out to turn off the water to the damaged hydrant.

No one had been arrested as of 7 a.m.

Authorities say the driver may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The investigation into the incident continues.
