Teen boy hiding out at Chino crash site captured after 5 others in chase

CHINO >> Police captured a teen boy Wednesday morning they say was among six people arrested after they led deputies and police on a wild pursuit following an alleged carjacking in La Puente that ended in a crash in front of a vacant juvenile detention center in Chino Tuesday night.

“He was found at the back fence of the Chino (Institute for Men) prison,” said Det. Sgt. Michael Mileski with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry station.

Initially five people, including three teens — two girls and a boy — were arrested Tuesday night after the vehicle they were in crashed in front of the shuttered Youth Correctional Facility at 15180 Euclid Avenue, Mileski said.

“It looks like he was out there all night until Chino police took him into custody,” he said.

The identities of the adults were not immediately available as of 10:45 a.m.

Deputies were first called to the 800 block of Greycliff Avenue in La Puente just after 9 p.m. for a report of a carjacking, Mileski said.

The victim told deputies at least one of the alleged carjackers threatened that he had a gun, Mileski said, but it’s unclear if one was recovered.

“There was a bat carried by one of the suspects, though,” he said. Initial reports said the car was forcibly taken from a woman by baseball bat- and skateboard-wielding teens.

Deputies spotted the stolen white Nissan Altima in the area of Fullerton Road and the 60 Freeway, he said, and a pursuit began.

Although deputies lost sight of the speeding vehicle shortly after the chase began, Mileski said the sheriff’s helicopter crew stayed with the fleeing vehicle.

Shortly after 10 p.m., the occupants of the car crashed in front of the and ran from the car into the center. The Youth Correctional Facility, also known as the Heman G. Stark Youth Correctional Facility, was decommissioned in 2010.

Chino police arrested five people Tuesday night near the crash scene, officials said. The last teen was found around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Mileski, the teens range in age from 14 to 16 years of age.

Authorities later learned the group had attempted to carjack a vehicle in Diamond Bar prior to taking the Altima, said Mileski, but they were unsuccessful.

Industry station authorities are investigating the incident.
