PASADENA >> The California Highway Patrol arrested former boxer Oscar De La Hoya for allegedly driving drunk after they pulled over his Land Rover in Pasadena early Wednesday morning.
De La Hoya smelled of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests, according to a statement from the CHP.
The incident started on Del Mar Boulevard, west of Arroyo Boulevard at 1:57 a.m. when an officer from the Altadena CHP office saw a speeding Land Rover with “mechanical violations”.
A CHP spokesman didn’t know how fast the Land Rover was traveling and didn’t know what were the mechanical violations mentioned in the statement. The report has not been completed.
The officer pulled over the Land Rover at Del Mar Boulevard, west of St. John Avenue.
While talking to the driver, the officer detected the odor of alcohol coming from inside the Land Rover, The officer asked De La Hoya to step out of the vehicle.
“While the investigating officer talked with the driver outside of the vehicle, he continued to detect an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver’s breath and person,” according to the CHP statement.
“The driver was shown and demonstrated a series of field sobriety test. The driver agreed to the tests and failed to perform them as shown and demonstrated.”
CHP Officer Rambert Salcido said De La Hoya was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, cited and released to his manager.
De La Hoya won several world titles in six different weight classes before his retirement.
A woman who answered the phone at Golden Boy Promotions told the newspaper to send an email to a spokesperson for the boxer.
