With a season of good cheer upon us, local police agencies are hoping that those who imbibe too much good cheer don’t then get behind a wheel and drive.
To discourage driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police departments are taking a number of tactics in a combined effort called “Drive sober or get pulled over,” which begins Friday.
Montclair
Montclair police will set up a DUI checkpoint Friday. As is the practice of many agencies, the department did not indicate where on a recent news release.
Ontario
Ontario police are beefing up the number of officers on patrol to look for impaired driving.
“Beginning Dec. 16 and continuing into the New Year, you will see stepped up enforcement watching closely for anyone who is driving impaired,” Lt. John Duffield said in a news release. “We want to keep our roads safe for holiday travelers, so we will have zero tolerance for drunk or drugged driving.”
Many departments are advocating for a free smartphone app known as Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app, available for Android or iPhone. The app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more.
The app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb, according to Montclair police.
