POMONA >> Investigators and family members hope someone will come forward to solve who struck and killed an Azusa father of two when he ran out of gas on a Pomona freeway just before Thanksgiving.
Dwayne Armenta, 36, of Azusa was killed around 2:30 a.m. Nov. 23 as he was trying to get to a gas station after running out of gas on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Kellogg Drive in Pomona, his cousin, Brianna Reomales, said.
He was walking on the freeway “after an hour of not having any help or AAA assistance,” Reomales said in an email.
Initial California Highway Patrol reports indicate two vehicles had stopped after striking Armenta, but further investigations show the driver who fatally hit Armenta fled the scene.
“Right now, we don’t have a good description,” CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said. “We contacted all the body shops in the area to ask them if any vehicles had come in with damage consistent with the crash.”
Armenta’s family is left to pick up the pieces and to help the 36-year-old’s children, a 14-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl, make sense of their loss.
“I think the thing he loved most in life was his son Devin and daughter Triana,” said brother-in-law Edward Bustos, who called Armenta a dutiful father who loved his children immensely.
He recalled how Armenta was always trying to help others and had recently reconnected with an older brother.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to offset costs of the burial.
The youngest of four children, Armenta’s loved ones say his loss has been devastating to the close-knit family.
“No one deserves to be left on the side of the road to die like an animal,” Reomales said. “This car is still out there, and someone had to have noticed something.”
