ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST >> The coroner’s office on Thursday identified the 31-year-old motorcyclist who was found dead after crashing off Highway 39 in the Angeles National Forest earlier this week.
Welter Ivan Virula Castillo of Los Angeles was discovered about 7 a.m. Tuesday near mile marker 32.51, east of Coldbrook campground.
Castillo and other motorcyclists went for a ride Monday night. He went ahead of them, according to deputies.
The California Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, said the motorcyclists were riding in dense fog.
Two of Castillo’s fellow riders lost sight of him on Highway 39 above East Fork Road. They searched but couldn’t find Castillo. They reported him missing to the San Dimas Sheriff’s station at 10:36 p.m. Monday.
CHP spokesman Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said the motorcyclist left the roadway, hit a berm along the west side of the road and was ejected.
San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team searched for Castillo Monday and Tuesday. A sheriff’s helicopter saw the crash site Tuesday morning. Castillo and his motorcycle were found over the side of Highway 39.
