ONTARIO >> Police are trying to determine what caused a man to die while in their custody Wednesday morning.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m., police responded to a solo-vehicle crash at Archibald Avenue south of Ontario Ranch Road.
Officers found the driver, Kyle Briones, 28, of Ontario still unconscious in his car after it crashed into a curb and street sign, according to a police news release.
Police allege Briones showed signs of impairment while he staggered from the scene.
While officers tried to help the crash victim, he became agitated and started struggling with police, the release said.
That’s when officers handcuffed Briones. Once handcuffed, he again lost consciousness and firefighters, who were staged nearby, were called to the scene.
Briones was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The San Bernardino County coroner performed an autopsy Thursday. During the examination, officials discovered a previously existing medical condition that may have contributed to Briones’ death, the release said.
The incident was captured on camera and investigators are reviewing the videotape.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Ontario Police Department at 909-986-6711 or Detective Josh Burks at 909-395-2912.
